In the nick of time, we just made it to the Kodak Center. This place is part of the Eastman Business Park, a once thriving industrial site that was the center of Kodak’s film, camera and photographic production empire. Sadly today, with its many empty lots and disused buildings, it is a shadow of its former self (film is still produced and the train still runs). While recent efforts have been made to create an innovation hub and attract small start-up manufacturing businesses, it will never again see the hustle and bustle from more than 15,000 Kodak employees at the peak of its industrial might. Today, the Kodak Center aims to promote the continued use of motion picture film while celebrating the rich, colourful and innovative history of Eastman Kodak Company. Besides its cinema, it also has a fantastic museum in the lobby with many rare and historical Kodak items (this alone is worth checking out if you are passing by). This includes the very first digital camera ever invented by Steve Sasson in 1975. An almost eerie reminder that Kodak, the technological and pioneering giant that it was, could have had it all but decided not to. There’s also a great gift shop with loads of Kodak merch (t-shirts, stickers, patches and books). It almost felt like they have become a clothing and lifestyle brand more than they have a digital company… Time will tell if Kodak continues to survive and what it’s future holds. But if you are in or near Rochester, or just a film nerd like me, then this place is a must see.
